Ka Haku Au - A Poet's Lament

Ka Haku Au - A Poet's Lament
Kohine Ponika

The late Kohine Ponika wrote some of the most popular Maori songs ever written; yet few know that these songs, written over a period of 50 years, were all the work of one composer who could not read a note of music. Over the years hundreds of kapa haka groups have sung Kohine's songs to a simple beat that squeezed out the music. The arrangements on this CD bring out the timeless music in Kohine's songs

"Ka Haku Au" is a sonata of what Kohine Ponika knew her music could become. Maori lyrics and catchy melodies are honoured while a fusion of jazz, rhythm and blues (with the voices and musicianship of Kohine's whanau and "friends" featuring Kui Wano, Rawiri Alexander and Brent Turner) takes her music into today and the future.

Traditionalists be warned !!! "Ka Haku Au" is quintessentially Maori and uniquely Kiwi as it politely flips recent trends to combine contemporary music with traditional instruments and sounds.

Produced by Kui Wano and superbly engineered by Dick Reade ("Rain Of The Children", "The Navigator". Merchant Of Venice" etc).
